Check These Before You Call

Plenty of no-heat calls come down to something you can check in five minutes.

Still cold? Write down any error code or blinking light pattern before you reset anything. It tells us where to start.

  • The remote or thermostat is set to Heat, not Cool, Dry or Auto
  • Batteries in the remote are fresh
  • Indoor head filters aren’t caked with dust
  • The breaker and the outdoor disconnect switch are on
  • Snow isn’t drifted against or over the outdoor unit
  • Nothing is blocking the airflow from the indoor head

Common Calls for Heat Pump Repair in Bourne

These come in most once the weather turns.

Blowing cool air

If the head runs but the air feels lukewarm, causes include a refrigerant leak, a failing sensor, or an outdoor unit that can’t pull heat because its coil is blocked with ice or debris.

Solid ice that won’t clear

Light frost is normal. Thick ice that stays put points to a defrost fault, a bad sensor, poor drainage, or roof water dripping on the unit.

Error codes and blinking lights

Each brand uses its own codes. Some mean a simple sensor fault, others a compressor or board issue. We read the code, then test the part instead of guessing.

Water leaking from a head

A clogged condensate drain or a head that’s slightly out of level sends water down the wall. Clearing the line and checking the slope usually fixes it.

Salt Air, the Canal and Your Outdoor Unit

Bourne meets salt water on several fronts: Buzzards Bay off Monument Beach, Pocasset and Cataumet, Cape Cod Bay at Sagamore Beach, and the canal through the middle. Outdoor units here breathe salty air all year.

Salt settles on the thin aluminum fins and slowly corrodes the coil. It also reaches electrical connections and control boards, the source of many intermittent faults. A crusted coil can’t move heat well, so the system works harder for less warmth.

The fix is regular care. A gentle freshwater rinse of the outdoor coil with a garden hose (never a pressure washer) takes off the buildup before it does damage. When it’s time to replace a unit, ask about corrosion-resistant coil coatings.

We had guests staying in our house in Dennis. The water heater went off on a Saturday evening. After furiously calling any and all plumbers listed with 24 hr emergency service to try to get someone out there but no response, I called this number at 8 PM Saturday night. Nick actually answered his phone. He was onsite at a job in Falmouth but said he could go first thing in the morning. He followed through on that. He was prompt and quickly fixed the problem early Sunday morning. What a relief knowing our guests could take a shower. He was in touch with updates and info and super responsive. Price was great. I was so relieved. He was so reassuring and literally we could get no one else to even answer the phone. We were so grateful and will be calling him again.

What Heat Pump Maintenance in Bourne Includes

A yearly visit before the heating season catches most of what turns into a midwinter repair.

1

Clean the indoor heads

We wash the filters, then clean the coil and blower wheel inside each head. That restores airflow and clears out the buildup behind musty smells.

2

Rinse and inspect outside

The outdoor coil gets a freshwater rinse to remove salt and grime. We check the fins, fan, cabinet and pad, and confirm the unit sits level and above the snow line.

3

Test the system

We check refrigerant pressures, electrical connections and condensate drains, then run it in heating to confirm the defrost cycle starts and ends properly.

4

Report what we found

We explain anything worn or corroding, what can wait, and what shouldn’t.

Normal Defrost or a Real Problem?

In heating mode, a heat pump melts frost off its outdoor coil every so often. That defrost cycle looks odd the first time you see it.

Normal defrost

  • Outdoor fan stops for several minutes
  • Steam rising off the unit
  • A whoosh as the system switches over
  • Indoor air cools off briefly
  • Light frost that clears on its own

Call for service

  • Ice building up cycle after cycle
  • Coil encased in solid ice
  • Defrost runs constantly, or never seems to run
  • Heat stays off well after the cycle should end
  • Error code on the head or thermostat

Don’t chip ice off with a shovel or scraper. The fins and coil tubes bend and puncture easily, and a refrigerant leak turns a small repair into a big one.

Heat pump repair in Bourne: common questions

Still not sure? Call (508) 274-9939 and talk it through with someone who does this every day.

Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in winter?

It’s most likely in defrost, which lasts several minutes and is normal. If cool air continues after that, check that the mode is set to Heat and the filters are clean. Ongoing cold air usually points to low refrigerant, a failed sensor or an iced outdoor coil, and that needs a technician.

Does salt air shorten the life of a heat pump?

It can. Salt corrodes the aluminum fins, the coil and electrical connections, and an outdoor unit near the water usually shows wear sooner than one inland. Rinsing the coil with fresh water a few times a year and booking yearly maintenance slows that down. When a unit does need replacing, a model with a coated coil holds up better.

Is it normal for steam to come off my heat pump?

Yes. Steam rising from the outdoor unit in winter almost always means it’s in defrost, melting frost off the coil. The fan usually stops while this happens and restarts a few minutes later. Smoke, a burning smell or loud grinding are different and mean you should shut the unit off and call.

Can I reset my heat pump myself after an error code?

You can try once by switching it off at the breaker for a few minutes, but write down the code first. If the same code returns, more resets won’t fix it and can mask the problem. Give us the code when you call.

Is it worth repairing an older heat pump?

Often, yes. Sensors, fan motors, drain lines and many electrical parts are reasonable repairs. A failed compressor, a major refrigerant leak or heavy coil corrosion on an aging unit is where replacement starts to make more sense. We’ll explain what failed and price repair and replacement side by side so you can decide.
