Furnace Repair in Falmouth, MA for Forced Air Homes

A furnace heats air and pushes it through ducts to vents in each room, while a boiler heats water for baseboard or radiators. If your home has ductwork, and especially if it has central air, there’s a good chance a furnace is doing the heating, since the two share the same ducts.

We work on natural gas furnaces, propane furnaces where gas service doesn’t reach, and oil-fired furnaces still running in older homes, including brands like Goodman and Bryant. Our Falmouth heating and plumbing team has been fixing them since 2001.

Three-Minute Checks Before You Call

Some no-heat calls turn out to be simple. If none of these helps, leave the furnace off and call us.

Many furnaces also have a blinking status light behind a small window. Note the pattern before you call.

  • Thermostat set to heat, above room temperature, with fresh batteries
  • Furnace power switch on (it looks like a light switch near the unit)
  • Breaker not tripped
  • Filter not clogged with dust
  • Furnace door panel fully closed
  • Propane or oil tank not empty
  • PVC vent pipes outside clear of snow and leaves

Why Furnaces Stop Heating

These are the furnace repairs we make most often around Falmouth.

Igniter failure

Most gas and propane furnaces light with a hot surface igniter. These are brittle and wear out. When one cracks, the furnace tries to light, fails, and locks itself out.

Dirty flame sensor

The flame sensor confirms the burners lit. A light coating on it can make the furnace fire for a few seconds, then shut off. Cleaning or replacing it is a common fix.

Inducer and pressure switch

The inducer fan clears exhaust before the burners light, and a pressure switch confirms it. A worn motor, blocked vent or clogged condensate trap will stop the startup.

Blower problems

If the burners run but little air reaches the vents, it may be a failing blower motor, a weak capacitor, or a blower wheel caked with dust.

Oil burner issues

An oil furnace’s burner needs yearly cleaning. Skip it and you get soot, a plugged nozzle or a burner that won’t light. Running the tank dry can also pull sludge into the fuel line.

★★★★★Furnace tune-up

Totally impressed with Blue Pacific Heating as they did a tune-up on my furnace.

★★★★★AC installation

Nick and Dylan were on time and again did a fabulous job installing a new AC unit during a severe heat wave. They acquired the unit, disposed of the broken one and tackled two unusual circumstances during the install. They also had to work in a severely tight attic space that required altering the condenser metal housing. Finished in a day and kept to the estimate even with the unexpected hurdles. Blue Pacific is awesome.

★★★★★Water heater replacement

Nick replaced my hot water tank on short notice. He was communicative, timely, and did everything so neatly. Job well done and would call first for anything HVAC next time.

Carbon Monoxide and Furnace Safety

Any furnace that burns gas, propane or oil makes carbon monoxide, and the venting keeps it outside. A cracked heat exchanger, a loose flue pipe or a sidewall vent buried in snow can all send exhaust where it shouldn’t go.

Massachusetts law requires working CO alarms on every living level of a home with fuel-burning equipment, and within ten feet of bedroom doors. Test them when you change the clocks. Headaches or nausea that ease when you leave the house are a warning sign too.

Smell Gas or Hear a CO Alarm?

Leave the house with everyone in it, and once you’re outside, phone 911 or the utility or propane company. Once it’s safe, call us at (508) 274-9939 to find and fix the source.

What Happens During a Fall Furnace Tune-Up

A tune-up in September or October finds worn parts before the first cold snap.

1

Airflow

We check or replace the filter and inspect the blower wheel and motor.

2

Ignition and burners

We test the igniter, clean the flame sensor and check for a steady flame. Oil units get a new nozzle and filter.

3

Venting and condensate

We inspect the flue or PVC vents, test the inducer and pressure switch, and flush the condensate trap on high-efficiency models.

4

Safety checks

We inspect the heat exchanger, test the safety switches and run a full heating cycle.

Standard vs. High-Efficiency Furnaces

If your furnace is due for replacement, this is usually the first decision.

Standard efficiency

  • Vents up an existing chimney or metal flue
  • No condensate drain needed
  • Often the simpler swap in older homes

High-efficiency (condensing)

  • Uses less fuel for the same heat
  • Vents through PVC pipe out a sidewall
  • Produces water that needs a drain

Sidewall vents on condensing furnaces have to stay above snow and away from windows and decks. Some homeowners pair a ducted heat pump in Falmouth with a gas or propane furnace that only runs on the coldest days.

When a New Furnace Makes More Sense

A repair is usually right for igniters, sensors, motors and switches. Replacement is worth pricing if the heat exchanger is cracked, repairs keep stacking up, or you’re switching an oil furnace to gas or propane, which usually means new gas line installation.

If you have central air, the AC coil sits on the furnace and shares its blower, so replacing both together can make sense. See AC repair in Falmouth for the cooling side. Hot water baseboard or radiators mean you have a boiler, which our boiler repair team handles. Either way, the quote is free.

Questions about furnace repair in Falmouth

Have a different question? Reach us at (508) 274-9939, or send the form and we’ll get back to you.

Why does my furnace turn on and then shut off after a few seconds?

Most often it’s a dirty flame sensor. The burners light, the sensor can’t confirm the flame, and the control shuts the gas off for safety. After a few tries the furnace locks out. A clogged filter or vent problem can cause similar cycling. Cleaning the sensor is a quick fix.

How often should I change my furnace filter?

Check it monthly during heating season and change it when it looks gray. Basic one-inch filters often need changing every one to three months, and thicker media filters last longer. Pets, construction dust and sandy summer traffic shorten that. A clogged filter is one of the most common reasons furnaces overheat and shut down.

Is it safe to run my furnace if the CO alarm went off once and stopped?

No. Treat any CO alarm as real until someone checks the furnace, venting and other fuel-burning appliances. Leave the furnace off, air out the house and call us. A cracked heat exchanger or partly blocked flue can produce CO on and off, so a quiet alarm isn’t proof the problem is gone.

Can you convert my oil furnace to gas or propane?

Yes. It usually means a new furnace rather than converting the old one, plus gas piping, updated venting, and taking the old oil tank out of service. Propane works where there’s no natural gas service. We quote the full job so you can compare it with repairing the oil furnace.

When is the best time for a furnace tune-up on the Cape?

September or October, before you need heat every night, when scheduling is flexible. For seasonal homes that keep the heat low all winter, get the tune-up done before you leave, so a failure doesn’t go unnoticed in an empty house.
