AC Repair in Falmouth, MA: The Problems We Fix Most

Most central air breakdowns fall into a few patterns.

Blowing warm air

Check the thermostat and breaker first. If the indoor fan runs but the air is warm, the outdoor unit may have a failed capacitor or contactor, or the system is low on refrigerant because of a leak.

Frozen coil or iced lines

Ice on the refrigerant lines usually means poor airflow from a clogged filter or dirty coil, or low refrigerant. Turn cooling off and let it thaw before we arrive.

Short cycling

A system that kicks on and off every few minutes may be oversized, low on refrigerant, or have a thermostat in a bad spot. It wears out the compressor and leaves the house clammy.

Water leaking indoors

The coil pulls a lot of water out of humid air. If the drain line or pan clogs, it overflows into ceilings, closets or the basement. Clearing the line usually fixes it, and a float switch can shut the AC off first next time.

Noisy outdoor unit

Buzzing often points to a failing capacitor or contactor. Grinding or squealing can be a fan motor bearing. Rattling is often loose panels or debris in the fan.

Salt Air and Sand Are Hard on Outdoor Condensers

The condenser outside does the heavy lifting, and on the Cape it sits in salty, sandy air all year. Salt eats at the thin aluminum fins and copper tubing, and corroded fins can’t release heat well. The system runs longer, works harder and cools less.

Homes near the water, from Surf Drive to Falmouth Heights to the Waquoit Bay side, see it worst. A gentle rinse of the coil during a tune-up, keeping shrubs and beach gear a couple of feet away, and setting the unit level on a pad all help it last.

If your outdoor unit has heavy corrosion or a leaking coil, we’ll tell you plainly whether it’s worth repairing.

Opening a Summer Home? Get the AC Ready First

Many Falmouth houses sit closed from fall until late spring, and AC problems tend to show up on the first hot weekend. Here’s how we get a system ready.

1

Check the outdoor unit

We clear leaves and winter debris, look for damage from snow or plows, and make sure the unit sits level. Mice like to nest in condensers over winter and chew wiring.

2

Replace the filter, inspect the coil

A filter that sat all winter may be dusty or damp. We swap it and check the indoor coil for dirt or mold that blocks airflow.

3

Flush the condensate drain

Sludge in a line that sat dry can block it the moment the system starts making water, so we clear it before the first humid day.

4

Test cooling under load

We run the system, check refrigerant pressures, electrical parts and the temperature drop across the coil, and flag anything borderline.

★★★★★Mini split and leak repair

We just moved into a new home in Mashpee and we had a leak under the sink. I was really impressed by how communicative and professional Nick was in our interactions. The leak was repaired and then two days later, one of our mini-splits started leaking inside the house. Dylan came over and thoroughly diagnosed the problem, not stopping at just trying to clear the drain line, but visually inspecting the line outside of the house. He found the installers had cut corners, causing a kinked drainline. Dylan replaced the cheap hose with PVC and made sure the unit was draining properly.

He was incredibly courteous, professional, and took the time to answer all of my questions and show me exactly what he was doing.

Plumbing/HVAC issues are personal nightmares for me, but we now have peace of mind knowing that we have reliable experts to take care of any issues. Great service all around!

Book Your AC Tune-Up Before the First Heat Wave

When the first real heat wave hits, everyone wants their AC working that same week. A spring visit catches small problems while there’s still time to fix them on your schedule.

When an Old Central Air System Isn’t Worth Fixing

Most AC repairs are routine. Sometimes, though, putting money into the old system doesn’t add up. We’ll lay out both sides on site.

Fix it this season if

  • The failure is a capacitor, contactor, fan motor or drain
  • The system uses current refrigerant
  • The coils are in decent shape

Start pricing a new system if

  • The compressor has failed on an older system
  • It runs on R-22, which is no longer produced
  • The outdoor coil is badly corroded or leaking

If you’re replacing the outdoor unit anyway, it’s worth asking whether a heat pump makes sense instead, since it cools the same way and also heats. Our page on heat pumps and ductless systems in Falmouth covers ducted and ductless options.

How Central Air Connects to the Rest of Your System

In most homes, central air shares the indoor blower and ductwork with a furnace, with the cooling coil sitting right on top of it. A weak blower, a bad control board or a clogged filter affects heating and cooling alike. Our furnace repair and tune-up page covers the heating side.

Boiler-heated homes with no ductwork can’t add central air without a lot of new duct runs, which is why ductless mini splits are usually the simpler route to cooling in those houses.

We handle AC calls across the Upper Cape, including for homeowners in Mashpee and Bourne homes near the canal. Since 2001 we’ve handled heating, cooling and plumbing under one roof, so one call to our Falmouth HVAC and plumbing company covers the whole house.

Questions about AC repair in Falmouth

Have a different question? Reach us at (508) 274-9939, or send the form and we’ll get back to you.

My AC is on but the house won’t cool down. What’s wrong?

Usually it’s a clogged filter or dirty coil choking airflow, a failed part in the outdoor unit like the capacitor, or low refrigerant from a leak. Make sure the outdoor unit is running and swap the filter. If it still blows warm, shut it off and call us before the compressor is damaged.

What should I do if ice is forming on my AC lines?

Turn the cooling off and set the fan to on so the ice melts. Running the system frozen can damage the compressor. Once it thaws, replace the filter. If it freezes again, the cause is likely low refrigerant or a dirty indoor coil, and both need a technician.

Why is water leaking from my air conditioner inside the house?

The condensate drain is almost always the cause. The indoor coil pulls a lot of moisture out of humid Cape air, and that water drains through a small line. Algae or debris clogs it, the pan overflows, and water ends up in the ceiling or basement. We clear the line and can add a safety switch.

Should I cover my outdoor AC unit for the winter?

Not with a tight plastic cover. It traps moisture and gives mice a place to nest. A piece of plywood on top to keep ice and snow off is fine. If the unit is a heat pump, don’t cover it at all, since it runs all winter. Either way, have the coil cleaned in spring, especially near the water.

Can you install central air in a house with a boiler and no ducts?

We can, but it means running new ductwork through attics, closets or soffits, which is a big job in many older Capes. Ductless mini splits are usually simpler and also add heat. We’ll tell you which makes more sense.
