Natural Gas or Propane: What’s at Your House
Natural gas mains run under some Falmouth streets but not others. If you have a gas meter on the side of the house, you’re on the utility line. If there’s a big tank in the yard or a pair of cylinders by the foundation, you’re on propane, which is common wherever the mains never reached.
Both fuels can run the same kinds of appliances, but they don’t burn the same way. Propane runs at a different pressure and needs different orifices and regulators. Any appliance we connect has to be set up for the fuel it’s actually getting, and the pipe has to be sized for the total load on the system.
Not sure whether natural gas is available on your street? The gas utility can tell you, and we plan the piping from there.

Gas Appliances We Pipe and Connect
Each appliance adds load, so we look at the whole system before tapping a new line off an old one.
Ranges and cooktops
Swapping an electric range for gas means a new line to the kitchen, a shutoff behind the appliance, and a proper connector. We also convert ranges between natural gas and propane when the manufacturer allows it.
Dryers
A gas dryer needs its own line and shutoff. We run it, connect the dryer and check for leaks before the first load.
Standby generators
Generators draw a lot of gas when they start. We size the line so the generator gets enough fuel without starving the furnace or water heater during an outage.
Grills, fire pits and pool heaters
Outdoor lines need the right pipe, burial depth and protection. We pipe built-in grills, fire pits and pool heaters, including replacements for older pool heaters that have given out.
Heating and hot water
Boilers, furnaces and tankless water heaters often need a bigger line than what’s there. Our tankless installation tips explain why gas sizing matters so much.

How Gas Line Installation in Falmouth, MA Works
Here’s how a typical gas line job goes, start to finish.
1
Measure the load
We add up the BTU rating of every gas appliance in the house, current and planned, and measure the run from the meter or tank. That tells us the pipe size.
2
Plan the route
We find the cleanest path from the meter or tank to the appliance, through the basement or crawlspace where we can, and tell you about any holes or access we’ll need. We take care of the paperwork with the town.
3
Run and pressure test
We install the piping, shutoffs and connectors, then pressure test the system and hold it to make sure nothing drops.
4
Hook up and light it off
We connect the appliance, purge the line, light it and make sure it’s burning right. Then we show you where the new shutoff valve is.
Converting From Oil to Gas or Propane
Plenty of older Falmouth homes still heat with oil. Switching fuels is a bigger job than a new appliance hookup.
What changes
- New gas or propane line to the mechanical room
- A new burner or, more often, new equipment
- Different venting, often through a side wall
- The oil tank gets removed or properly abandoned
What to think about
- Is natural gas on your street or is it propane?
- Is the boiler or furnace near the end of its life?
- Would a heat pump cover part of the load?
- Can the water heater switch to gas at the same time?
For the heating equipment side, our boiler installation team can size a new system. Some homeowners also look at heat pumps and mini splits and the Mass Save rebates that may apply before deciding.

What people ask us about gas line work in Falmouth
Don’t see your question here? Call or text (508) 274-9939. We’ll give you a straight answer.
Can you run a gas line for a new range in a kitchen remodel?
Yes. We run the line, add a shutoff behind the range and pressure test it before the stove goes in. If you’re switching from electric to gas, we check that your meter or tank can handle the extra load. Tell us the model you picked and we’ll plan the line around it.
Can I run a gas line to my grill or fire pit?
Yes. We run underground or wall-mounted lines to built-in grills, fire pits and outdoor kitchens on natural gas or propane. The pipe is sized for the appliance, buried at the right depth or protected where exposed, and gets its own shutoff so you can close it at the end of the season.
Can my gas line handle a standby generator?
It depends on the size of your meter or propane tank and the pipe running from it. A standby generator can draw as much as several appliances combined. We total your existing load, check the supply, and tell you if the line or tank needs upgrading.
Can a natural gas appliance run on propane?
Many can, using a manufacturer’s conversion kit with different orifices and a regulator change. Not every model allows it. We check the manual and the data plate before converting, and we never just connect an appliance set up for one fuel to the other.
How long does gas line installation take?
A simple dryer or range line is usually done in a day. Longer runs, generators and fuel conversions can take a few days. We’ll give you a realistic timeline with your quote.
What should I do if I smell gas?
Leave the house right away. Don’t switch lights on or off, start a car in the garage, or use your phone inside. From outside, call 911 or your gas or propane supplier. Once they’ve made it safe, we’ll locate the leak and repair it.
