What Goes Into an Outdoor Shower Install
An outdoor shower looks simple. Getting it to work well for years takes a few decisions up front.
Hot and cold supply
We tap the house’s hot and cold lines, usually in the basement or crawlspace, and run them through the wall to the shower. The longer the run, the longer you wait for hot water, so location matters.
Mixing valve
A pressure-balancing or thermostatic valve keeps the temperature steady when someone flushes a toilet inside. That matters most with kids or rental guests who don’t know the house.
Fixtures that survive salt air
Cheap chrome fixtures pit and corrode fast near the water. Solid brass and copper hold up much better and weather to a look many Cape homeowners like.
Hot water capacity
Four people coming back from the beach can drain a small tank. If yours already runs short, our water heater service can size an upgrade. Tankless units also need enough flow to turn on.
Copper or PEX for an Outdoor Shower?
We use both, often on the same shower. The choice depends on whether the pipe is exposed or hidden.
Copper
- Looks good exposed on a shingle wall
- Stands up to sun and weather
- Can split if water freezes inside
- Takes more labor to install
PEX
- Fast to run through walls and crawlspaces
- Handles a freeze better, but isn’t freeze-proof
- Breaks down in direct sunlight
- Should be hidden or covered outdoors
A common setup is PEX inside the house and copper wherever the pipe shows. Either way, every line has to slope back to a drain point.
Where the Shower Water Goes
Where the water goes after the shower matters as much as the shower itself. Most of the outdoor showers we build drain into a dry well or a bed of crushed stone under the floor, and a busy one may tie into the septic instead. Water dumping onto the ground next to the house ends up against the foundation, so we plan for that from the start.
We’ll look at your yard, where the shower is going and how often it gets used, then lay out the drainage before anything gets dug. Sandy Cape soil drains well, which helps, but we still keep the water moving away from the house.

Straight from our Google reviews
They have done a great job. I had a previous plumber in there who said it wasn’t possible and wanted to run the pipe on the outside of the house. Blue Pacific came in reconnected the pipes ran through the wall pressure tested them and made everything work when other company said it wasn’t possible so happy thank you so much guys
Highly recommend! Came out early the next day on a weekend and helped us with a house where two disabled people live. Really appreciated their prompt, courteous, clean, and friendly service. Issue was fixed quickly and reasonably charged.
Since we moved to the Cape last Fall we have used Blue Pacific several times. Nick Savoy is incredible and can do just about anything! He is professional, prompt, neat and a pleasure to do business with! If I could give him 10 stars I would!
Blue Pacific Plumbing did an excellent job! Great pricing, prompt service, and quality work. Highly recommend them to anyone looking for a reliable plumber!

Shutting Down an Outdoor Shower for Winter
Most outdoor shower repairs we see come from a fall shutoff that got skipped or done halfway. Here’s how we set them up to close properly.
1
Close the indoor shutoffs
We put the hot and cold shutoffs inside the heated part of the house, with drain caps, so the outdoor section can be isolated.
2
Open the outdoor valve
With the indoor valves closed, open the shower valve and head so air can get in and water can run out.
3
Drain the lines
Open the drain caps on the indoor valves to empty the run. Lines that slope correctly drain on their own. Otherwise we blow them out with air.
4
Leave it open
Leave the outdoor valve open all winter so any water left in the cartridge has room to expand instead of cracking the valve body.
Outdoor Shower Repairs We Handle
Bought a house with an outdoor shower someone else built? These are the problems we fix most.
Weak flow can be a clogged head or a problem back at the supply. If it’s the whole house, not just the shower, read up on what causes low water pressure. If a cracked line is spraying water when you open up in spring, shut it off inside and call our emergency plumbers in Falmouth.
- Valve cracked after a freeze
- Leaks at fittings once the water is turned on in spring
- Water that won’t get hot or swings in temperature
- Corroded or seized fixtures
- Lines that never drained because they don’t slope
- Low pressure at the shower head
Outdoor Shower Installation in Falmouth, MA for Rental Homes
For a summer rental near Old Silver Beach or Surf Drive, an outdoor shower is close to a must. It keeps sand out of the indoor tubs and drains, which means fewer clogs and less wear between guests.
Rental showers take more abuse, so we lean toward a mixing valve with scald protection, solid fixtures, and shutoffs that are easy for a caretaker to find. If you’re redoing an indoor bathroom at the same time, see our bathroom remodeling work.
We’ve been the plumber Falmouth homeowners call since 2001, and we install outdoor showers in neighboring towns too, from Bourne to Mashpee.

What people ask us about outdoor showers
Don’t see your question here? Call or text (508) 274-9939. We’ll give you a straight answer.
Can I add hot water to my existing outdoor shower?
Usually, yes. If your outdoor shower only has cold water, we can run a hot line from the house and add a mixing valve. How easy it is depends on how far the shower is from the water heater and what’s between them. We’ll check the route and give you a free quote.
When should I shut off my outdoor shower for the winter?
Before the first hard freeze, which on the Cape usually means sometime in the fall. Close the indoor shutoffs, open the outdoor valve, drain the lines and leave the valve open. If you’re not sure your shower drains fully, we can check it or do the shutdown for you.
Why does my outdoor shower leak every spring?
Water was left in the line or valve over the winter and it froze. Common causes are lines that don’t slope to a drain point, a valve that was closed instead of left open, or no indoor shutoff at all. We repair the damage and fix the setup so it drains properly next fall.
Does an outdoor shower need to connect to my septic system?
It depends on the house and how much the shower gets used. Many drain to a dry well or a bed of stone beside the shower, and some tie into the septic system. We’ll look at your yard and tell you what works before we install anything.
How long does it take to install an outdoor shower?
A basic hot and cold shower on an exterior wall is often done in a day. Longer supply runs, new drainage or a freestanding shower away from the house take longer. Timing also depends on whether the enclosure is already built.
