Heat Pump Installation in Falmouth, MA: One System for Heat and AC

A heat pump moves heat instead of burning fuel to make it. In winter it pulls heat from the outdoor air and brings it inside. In summer it runs in reverse like an air conditioner. For many Falmouth homeowners, that means adding real cooling and burning less oil or propane in one project.

Our installs include Fujitsu and Bosch equipment, ranging from a single wall unit in a hot upstairs bedroom to multi-zone systems that heat most of the house. Every one starts with a walk-through, not a guess from square footage, which is how we’ve worked as a Falmouth heating and cooling company since 2001.

Ducted Heat Pump or Ductless Mini Split?

The answer depends mostly on whether the house already has ductwork worth using.

Ducted heat pump

  • Uses existing ducts from central air or a furnace
  • One hidden air handler in the attic or basement
  • Only as good as the ductwork it connects to

Ductless mini split

  • No ducts needed, ideal for boiler-heated homes
  • Each indoor head controls its own zone
  • Good for additions, sunrooms and finished attics

Some houses get both: ducted for the main floor, a mini split for the room over the garage. Sandwich homeowners can find more on our Sandwich mini split installation page.

Planning a Heat Pump Around Cape Winters and Salt Air

Get sizing or placement wrong and a heat pump runs all day with cold rooms anyway.

Cold-climate models

Standard heat pumps lose output as temperatures drop. Cold-climate models keep heating on raw, windy Cape nights, and they’re what we recommend when the heat pump does most of the heating.

Sizing to the house

We look at insulation, windows and which rooms run cold. Oversized systems short cycle and leave the air clammy. Undersized ones can’t keep up in January.

Outdoor unit placement

Salt air corrodes coils and fasteners, especially near the water. We set units on stands or brackets above the snow line, out from under roof drip edges, with room to service them.

Defrost water

Heat pumps defrost themselves in winter and shed water while they do it. We place units so that water drains away instead of freezing on a walkway or deck stairs.

Reviews from Cape Cod homeowners

★★★★★AC installation

Nick and Dylan were on time and again did a fabulous job installing a new AC unit during a severe heat wave. They acquired the unit, disposed of the broken one and tackled two unusual circumstances during the install. They also had to work in a severely tight attic space that required altering the condenser metal housing. Finished in a day and kept to the estimate even with the unexpected hurdles. Blue Pacific is awesome.

Keeping Your Boiler as Backup Heat

You don’t have to rip out a working boiler to get a heat pump. Many Falmouth homes keep the oil, gas or propane boiler and let the heat pump carry the load most of the winter. On the coldest nights, a control hands heat back to the boiler.

You also get a fallback if the heat pump has a problem. Our article on comparing heat pumps and boilers covers the tradeoffs, and our boiler service in Falmouth keeps the backup ready.

How a Heat Pump Install Comes Together

From first call to first heating cycle:

1

Walk-through and quote

We look at the house, your current heat, the electrical panel and where equipment could go. The free quote spells out the equipment and the number of zones.

2

Rebate check

Before anything is ordered, we go over which Mass Save programs may apply, since some have equipment and control requirements that are easiest to meet when planned from the start.

3

Installation

We mount the outdoor unit and indoor heads or air handler, run and seal the refrigerant lines, set up condensate drains, and cover exterior lines so they look neat.

4

Startup

We test heating and cooling in every zone and show you how to use the controls and clean the filters.

Help With Mass Save Heat Pump Rebates

Mass Save offers rebates on qualifying heat pumps, and on the Cape those programs run through Cape Light Compact. The rules and amounts change from year to year, so we don’t quote figures here. Recent requirements have included equipment from Mass Save’s qualified products list and, for homes that keep a boiler or furnace, a control that switches heat sources at a set outdoor temperature. Summer houses may not qualify, since some programs expect year-round winter occupancy. We help you figure out what you qualify for and work through the application with you.

Heat Pump Maintenance and Repair

Heat pumps run most of the year, so they need service once or twice a year. A visit covers:

We also repair units that blow cold in heat mode, ice up, leak from an indoor head or flash error codes, here and in neighboring towns (see heat pump repair in Bourne). If you only need cooling from an existing central air system, our AC repair page covers that.

  • Clean indoor filters, coils and blower wheels
  • Flush condensate lines before they back up
  • Rinse salt and grime off the outdoor coil
  • Check refrigerant pressures and wiring
  • Test defrost plus heating and cooling modes

What people ask us about heat pumps in Falmouth

Don’t see your question here? Call or text (508) 274-9939. We’ll give you a straight answer.

Will a heat pump keep my house warm in a Cape Cod winter?

Yes, if it’s a cold-climate model sized for the house. Cape winters are damp and windy, but usually milder than inland Massachusetts, which helps. Drafty homes or big open rooms may need more capacity or a backup heat source, and we look at both before recommending a system.

How many mini split heads will my house need?

It depends on the layout more than the square footage. Open living areas can often share one head, while closed bedrooms usually each need their own. Several heads can often run off one or two outdoor units. We map it out room by room during the walk-through.

Why is water dripping from my mini split’s indoor unit?

Usually the condensate drain is blocked or kinked. Indoor heads pull moisture out of the air while cooling, and that water leaves through a small drain line. If the line is clogged, pitched wrong or crushed outside, water backs up and drips inside. We clear and test the line, check the outside run, and replace flimsy tubing with a proper drain when the original install cut corners.

Will salt air ruin the outdoor unit?

Not if it’s placed and maintained well. Salt speeds up corrosion on coils, fins and screws, so units near the water need more attention. We keep units out of direct spray where we can, raise them off the ground, and rinse the coil at every service visit.

How do I apply for Mass Save heat pump rebates on Cape Cod?

Start before the equipment is purchased. On the Cape, rebates run through Cape Light Compact under Mass Save, with rules about qualifying equipment and controls. We help you check eligibility and pull the paperwork together. Amounts change, so confirm current figures with the program.
