Adding a Heat Pump Without Giving Up Your Boiler
Plenty of homes in Barnstable’s villages still run a boiler feeding baseboard or radiators. If yours is running fine, there’s no rule that says it has to go. A partial-home setup adds a heat pump for most of the season and leaves the boiler in place for the coldest stretches.
The heat pump handles fall, spring and most winter days, and cools in summer. When it gets cold enough that the boiler is the better tool, a control hands off the job. You burn a lot less fuel, and you aren’t relying on one piece of equipment in February.
It also buys time. With a heat pump in place, an aging boiler can be replaced on your schedule instead of after a no-heat call.

How the Two Systems Share the Work
A boiler and a heat pump deliver heat differently, so the setup matters.
Separate delivery
The boiler keeps heating through your baseboard or radiators. The heat pump warms the air through wall heads or ducts. Nothing gets cut into your hot water loops.
Integrated controls
A control watches outdoor temperature and decides which system runs. It’s set to favor the heat pump and only call the boiler below a set point. Rebate programs require this on many fossil fuel setups.
Thermostats that agree
Two thermostats fighting each other is a common reason hybrid systems disappoint. We place and set them so the boiler doesn’t jump in every time a door opens.
Hot water stays put
If the boiler also makes your domestic hot water through an indirect tank, that keeps working year round. A heat pump for space heating doesn’t change it.
Partial-Home vs. Whole-Home Under Mass Save
Mass Save splits heat pump rebates into two tracks. A partial-home project keeps your existing system in place as backup. A whole-home project makes the heat pump the only heat source, which means the old system gets disconnected or removed and the house has to meet weatherization requirements first.
On the Cape, the electric side of Mass Save runs through Cape Light Compact, and gas customers may go through their gas utility. Which one applies, what qualifies and what paperwork is needed change yearly. That’s where we help.

Our Heat Pump Installation Process in Barnstable
A typical Barnstable project:
1
Check the boiler
We check your boiler’s age and condition first. Pairing a heat pump with a boiler that’s about to fail just postpones a bigger bill.
2
Size and pick equipment
We size the heat pump for the rooms it will serve and choose a model that fits the house and the current rebate rules. Brands we install include Fujitsu and Bosch.
3
Install and wire controls
We set the outdoor unit, run lines, mount indoor equipment and wire the integrated control to the boiler, then test the switchover so you can see it work.
4
Help with the rebate
We go over what the program needs, such as the model numbers, invoice and any forms, and help you get the application filed. Rebates are paid by the program, not by us.

We hired Nick a year ago for some work and he's been terrific. Twice this week he responded immediately to emergencies: once through a facetime fix, once (Saturday on Memorial Day weekend!) through an emergency visit. Always skilled, sensible, low key, friendly and responsive. We can't recommend him highly enough!

Questions about heat pump installation in Barnstable
Have a different question? Reach us at (508) 274-9939, or send the form and we’ll get back to you.
At what temperature does the boiler take over from the heat pump?
That depends on how the control is set. We pick a switchover point based on your heat pump’s cold-weather output, your fuel, and how the house holds heat. Mass Save rules also cap how high it can be set if you want the rebate, which keeps the heat pump doing most of the work. We can lower it later if the heat pump keeps up.
Who pays the heat pump rebate, you or Mass Save?
The program pays it, not us. You pay for the installation, then the rebate application goes in with your invoice and equipment details, and the program sends payment once it’s approved. Processing takes several weeks. We help Barnstable homeowners pull the paperwork together, but the program decides eligibility and sets the rebate amount.
What are integrated controls on a heat pump?
Integrated controls connect your heat pump and your existing boiler or furnace so they don’t compete. The control reads outdoor temperature and runs the heat pump first, switching to the boiler only below a set point. Mass Save requires them on many partial-home projects that keep an oil, propane or gas system as backup.
Will my baseboard radiators still work with a heat pump?
Yes. Your hot water baseboard stays connected to the boiler and works exactly as it does now. A standard air source heat pump heats the air through wall heads or ducts, so it runs alongside the baseboard rather than through it. On mild days the baseboard simply stays cool.
Can the outdoor unit go on a wall bracket instead of the ground?
Yes. Wall brackets and roof stands are common when there’s no room on the ground or snow piles up where the unit would sit. It still needs space around it for airflow and a safe place for the defrost water to drain. We’ll pick the spot with you during the estimate.
