Drain Cleaning in Bourne: Hydro Jetting or Snaking?

Both methods clear clogs. They work differently, and the wrong one for the job is often why a drain clogs again weeks later.

Drain snaking

  • A rotating cable punches through a blockage or grabs it
  • Best for a single clog: a wad of wipes, hair, a dropped object
  • Fine for most tub, sink and toilet drains
  • Opens a channel but can leave grease or scale on the pipe wall

Hydro jetting

  • The jet strips buildup off the whole pipe wall
  • Best for grease, sludge, scale and fine root growth
  • Brings a coated pipe back to close to its full width
  • Needs a pipe in decent shape, so we often run the camera first

For a deeper look at the tradeoffs, read our article on hydro jetting vs. snaking.

Why Bourne Drains Clog More Than Once

A clog that returns every few weeks or months is telling you something. Either the pipe is coated, so debris keeps catching in the same place, or there’s a sag, an offset joint or a root entry point that snaking alone can’t fix.

For a repeat clog, we clear it, run a camera, then choose. If the pipe is coated, jetting usually ends the cycle. If it’s damaged, we show you where and talk through repair. We work this way on every drain cleaning call around Falmouth and the Upper Cape.

Opening a Bourne Summer Home: Drains First

Plenty of houses in Pocasset, Cataumet, Monument Beach and along Sagamore Beach sit empty for months. Dry drains deserve a check before the season’s first full house.

1

Refill the traps

Water in a trap blocks sewer gas. In a closed house it evaporates, which is often why an opened house smells. Run every sink, tub and shower briefly, and flush each toilet.

2

Run everything at once

With several fixtures going, watch the basement or ground-floor drains. If one gurgles or rises, the main line may have a problem that testing one fixture at a time wouldn’t reveal.

3

Check outdoor drains

Outdoor shower drains collect sand, leaves and the odd nest over winter. Pour a full bucket of water through each one and make sure it disappears at a normal pace.

4

Schedule any cleaning before move-in

If anything is slow, have it cleaned in May or early June, before the first renters or family arrive. A clog with a full house in July makes for a much worse day.

Drain Problems Specific to Waterfront and Seasonal Homes

Bourne’s Buzzards Bay shoreline runs from Buttermilk Bay past Wings Neck to Scraggy Neck. Houses near the water share a few drain headaches.

Sand in the lines

Beach sand rinses off feet and towels and settles in tub and shower traps, then works into the main. It’s heavy and won’t flush out on its own. Jetting moves it.

Outdoor shower drains

These drains take a beating all summer and often go to a small drywell. When they back up, the cause may be a clogged line or a drywell that’s filled with silt.

Long gaps in use

Pipes that sit dry for months let soap and kitchen residue harden on the walls. The first heavy use of the season knocks it loose at once and can cause a clog.

Lines that froze

A trap left holding water in an unheated house can freeze and crack. It stays a quiet leak until someone runs the sink. Protecting the traps when you close up prevents it.

Call (508) 274-9939. A blocked drain before a weekend arrival is same-day work for us in Bourne, and the 24-hour emergency line is always open.

Sewer in Buzzards Bay, Septic Almost Everywhere Else

Buzzards Bay village has its own sewer system and treatment plant. Much of the rest of Bourne relies on septic, and that matters when every drain in the house backs up at once.

On sewer, a full-house backup is a blockage in your line or, now and then, a problem in the town main. On septic, the culprit is either the pipe or a full tank. We clear and jet the line, but pumping is the septic company’s job. If our cable reaches the tank cleanly and the house still won’t drain, they’re your next call.

While we’re in the basement, we can look over anything else acting up. We also handle water heater repair in Bourne, and our page for plumbing in Bourne covers the rest.

Drain cleaning in Bourne: common questions

Still not sure? Call (508) 274-9939 and talk it through with someone who does this every day.

Is hydro jetting worth it for a drain that keeps clogging?

Often, yes. When a drain clogs again and again, the pipe is usually coated with grease, sludge or scale that a snake punches through but doesn’t remove. Jetting cleans the full pipe wall, which tends to stretch the time between clogs. If the camera shows a broken or sagging pipe, repair makes more sense.

How should the drains be protected when we close our Bourne summer house?

The goal is to keep water from freezing in places that can crack, mainly traps and fixture drains in unheated rooms. Traps are typically filled with plumbing antifreeze instead of water, and supply lines are drained. If you’re unsure it was done right, we can check for cracked traps and leaks when you open in spring.

Why does my outdoor shower drain flood the patio?

Usually the drain line or the drywell beneath it is full of sand, soap residue or silt. We can clear the line and check how fast the drywell takes water. If the drywell itself is clogged, it may need to be cleaned out or rebuilt. If you’re adding a new one, see our outdoor shower installation page.

Can hydro jetting damage the pipes in an older Bourne cottage?

It can if the pipe is already cracked or badly corroded, which is why we often run a camera first on older lines. On sound pipe, jetting at the right pressure is safe and very effective. If the footage shows weak sections, we switch to a snake or recommend a repair before cleaning.

Do you clean drains in Buzzards Bay and Sagamore?

Yes. We serve all of Bourne: Buzzards Bay, Bournedale and Sagamore Beach on the mainland side of the canal, Sagamore, and Bourne Village, Pocasset, Cataumet and Monument Beach on the Cape side. Most regular visits fit into the next 24 to 48 hours, and anything that can’t wait goes to our emergency plumbing line.
