From Site Visit to Hot Water: How Your Install Goes
Here’s the order we work in, from the first look to the first hot shower.
1
Site visit and sizing
We look at the current heater, the space, the vent route and your fuel supply, and ask how your household uses hot water. The size and model we recommend come from that.
2
Written quote
You get a free quote covering the heater, venting and any gas or piping changes. If there’s a real choice, like tank or tankless, we price both.
3
Scheduling
We book the install for a day that suits you and take care of the paperwork with the town, so there’s nothing for you to file.
4
Install and startup
The old heater is drained and removed, and the new one is set, piped, vented and fired. We check for water leaks, gas leaks and proper draft before handing it over.
5
Walk-through
Before we leave, we show you the shutoffs, the temperature setting and anything the new heater needs over the years, like flushing a tankless unit once a year.
Sizing a New Water Heater Around Your Hot Water Use
Bigger isn’t automatically better. An oversized tank burns fuel keeping water hot that nobody uses, and an undersized one runs cold halfway through the second shower. For tanks, the number to watch is the first-hour rating: how much hot water the heater delivers in a busy hour.
Tankless units are sized by flow rate at a given temperature rise. Groundwater runs colder in February than in August, so a unit that handles two summer showers may only manage one comfortably in winter. We size for the cold months, and a retired couple in Forestdale needs very different equipment than a big family hosting summer guests in East Sandwich.
Venting Options and Where Each One Fits
How a gas or propane heater vents often decides which models will work in your house.
Chimney (atmospheric) vent
Exhaust rises through a metal flue into the chimney. It’s simple, but it needs a sound, properly lined chimney, and it can struggle once a boiler that shared the flue is gone.
Power vent
A fan pushes exhaust out through plastic pipe, usually through a side wall. It frees the heater from the chimney but needs an outlet and makes some noise.
Direct vent
Pulls combustion air from outside and sends exhaust back out the same wall. A good fit for tight rooms with limited indoor air.
Tankless venting
Condensing tankless units usually vent in PVC through a side wall or roof, kept a safe distance from windows, doors and the ground.
Electric, no vent
Electric heaters need no venting at all, which makes them the simplest swap wherever the electrical service can handle one.

Picking the Right Water Heater for a Sandwich Home
The right heater depends on how your house uses hot water. A couple in a Forestdale ranch can be happy with a 40 or 50 gallon tank. A family with teenagers, or a house that fills up with guests all summer, may run out with that and do better with a bigger tank or a tankless unit.
Fuel matters too. Natural gas, propane, oil boilers with an indirect tank and electric heat pump water heaters all show up in Sandwich basements. We’ll look at what you have, ask how you use hot water and give you a straight recommendation. Our post on DIY vs. professional water heater installation covers why it’s worth having a plumber do it.

Parts That Go In Along With the Heater
A proper install includes the pieces around the heater that keep it safe and long-lived.
Each one is there for a reason. Either way, they’re in the quote up front.
- Thermal expansion tank on the cold supply
- Relief valve discharge pipe run to a safe spot
- Sediment trap on the gas supply
- Dielectric fittings where copper meets steel
- Drain pan where a leak could damage finished space
- New vent pipe, sealed and pitched correctly
Old Tank Already Leaking in Sandwich?
Shut the cold water valve above the heater and call (508) 274-9939. We take urgent calls around the clock and can often be there the same day.
Installing in Sandwich’s Older Homes
The older houses around the village center and Route 6A often have tight basements, low ceilings and old chimneys. We plan how the old tank comes out and the new one goes in ahead of time, so install day goes smoothly.
If the new heater needs a vent through an outside wall, we’ll show you exactly where it goes before anything gets drilled.

What people ask us about water heater installation in Sandwich
Don’t see your question here? Call or text (508) 274-9939. We’ll give you a straight answer.
What happens to my old water heater?
We drain it, carry it out and haul it away the same day. You don’t have to arrange anything. If the old tank is in a tight basement or crawlspace, we plan the route out before install day so nothing gets damaged on the way.
What size water heater does a family of four need?
Many families of four do fine with a tank in the 40 to 50 gallon range, but first-hour rating is a better guide than tank size. A big soaking tub, teenagers or back-to-back morning showers can push you higher. For tankless, we size by how many fixtures run at once in winter.
Can a new water heater vent into my old chimney?
Sometimes. The chimney has to be the right size, lined and in good shape. Trouble starts when a boiler that shared the flue is replaced with a sidewall-vented model, leaving the water heater alone in a flue too big for it. Then we’d suggest a liner or a power-vent heater.
Can you move a water heater to a different spot when you replace it?
Yes, within limits. Moving a heater means rerouting the water lines, the gas or electric supply and the vent, so it’s more work than a swap in the same spot. Gas units need a safe way to vent, and tankless units need gas piping sized for their burner. We’ll look at the new location and tell you whether it works before anything gets ordered.
Where can a tankless water heater be mounted?
Usually on a wall in a basement, utility room or garage, close to an outside wall for a short vent run. It also needs gas piping big enough for the burner at full fire, plus a condensate drain on condensing models. We pick the spot during the site visit.
