Boiler Repair in Sandwich Starts With the Whole System
Sandwich was settled in 1637, and many houses near the old town center and on Route 6A have the age to prove it. Their heating has usually been updated piece by piece, so it’s normal to find a newer burner on an older cast iron boiler, radiators upstairs and baseboard down, or a zone added when someone built a family room.
The patchwork is fine, but a repair has to fit the whole system. A replacement circulator has to move water through every radiator on its loop, and a new expansion tank has to match the volume of water in the pipes. We keep a good old boiler going while that’s safe and sensible, and say so when it isn’t. Our full range of boiler work is on our Falmouth boiler repair page.
Older Boiler Parts We Repair and Replace
These wear out most on heating systems that have been in a house for generations.
Cast iron sectional boilers
Built from heavy iron sections joined together, these boilers can last a very long time with care. We repair their burners, controls and near-boiler piping, and check the sections for seepage, which is usually the one problem not worth fixing.
Radiators and radiator valves
Cast iron radiators rarely fail outright, but they collect air, and their valves and unions start to drip with age. We bleed and balance radiators, repack or replace leaking valves, and fix the connections at each one.
Steel compression tanks
Older homes often have a steel expansion tank hung between the basement joists. When it fills with water, pressure spikes and the relief valve drips. We drain and recharge it, or swap it for a modern diaphragm tank.
Aquastats and old circulators
Original aquastats can stick or drift, letting the boiler run too hot or shut off too early. Three-piece circulators run for years with oiling but eventually need a new coupler or motor. We test both and repair or replace what’s worn.
Leaks, Drips and Banging Pipes in Sandwich Homes
Most leaks on older systems come from parts that wear out on schedule: radiator valve packing, air vents, circulator gaskets, a weeping relief valve or a fitting near the boiler that finally corroded through. These are routine repairs. Water seeping from inside the jacket is more serious, and our article on how long a residential boiler lasts explains what it usually means.
Ticking as the heat comes on is pipe expanding against wood framing. Gurgling means air in the lines, and sharp banging can come from trapped air or a pipe that lost its hanger. We purge air, add air separators, re-hang loose pipe and flush sediment, which often evens out the heat too. Water damage from an old leak is a job for our plumbers in Sandwich.

What Goes Into a Yearly Boiler Cleaning
Annual service matters more on an older boiler, especially one burning oil.
1
Clean the burner and flue passages
On oil boilers we brush soot from the heat exchanger, replace the nozzle and fuel filter, and set the electrodes. On gas and propane boilers we clean the burners and check the pilot or flame sensor.
2
Check combustion and draft
We test how cleanly the burner fires and confirm the chimney or vent is drawing properly. Poor draft wastes fuel and can push exhaust back into the house, so this step never gets skipped.
3
Test the safety devices
The relief valve, the high limit and, where the boiler has one, the low-water cutoff all get tested. These are the parts that protect the house if something else goes wrong.
4
Confirm pressure and heat everywhere
We read the pressure cold and hot, recharge the expansion tank if needed, then call for heat in each zone and bleed any radiator still holding air before we sign off.

Nick and Dylan were on time and again did a fabulous job installing a new AC unit during a severe heat wave. They acquired the unit, disposed of the broken one and tackled two unusual circumstances during the install. They also had to work in a severely tight attic space that required altering the condenser metal housing. Finished in a day and kept to the estimate even with the unexpected hurdles. Blue Pacific is awesome.
Dillon from Blue Pacific Cape Cod was highly professional and knowledgeable. So thankful to find Blue Pacific for great service.
Nick and all who work for him are great. Good communication, reliable and honest. Highly recommend

Water Coming From the Boiler?
Switch off the boiler’s power and close its cold water feed, then call (508) 274-9939. Urgent Sandwich boiler repairs are handled the same day.
Older Sandwich Homes and the Work Around the Boiler
Many of the houses north of Route 6 are old, with cast iron radiators, heating systems converted from coal or steam years ago, and piping that’s been patched more than once. We take our time in these basements, work around original floors and plaster, and keep repairs neat.
We also service high-efficiency gas and propane boilers all over town, from Forestdale to East Sandwich, where repairs lean toward condensate drains, vent blockages and control boards. When a boiler’s coil or indirect tank gives out, water heater installation in Sandwich may be the fix, and rooms the radiators never quite reach are good candidates for mini split installation in Sandwich.

Boiler repair in Sandwich: common questions
Still not sure? Call (508) 274-9939 and talk it through with someone who does this every day.
Is it worth repairing a cast iron boiler that’s been in the house for decades?
Often, yes. A cast iron boiler with sound sections and a healthy burner can keep running reliably once worn parts like circulators, controls or valves are replaced. What decides it is whether the sections leak, how the repair cost compares with replacement, and how cleanly the boiler burns.
Why are some of my radiators cold while others are hot?
Trapped air is the usual reason, especially in top-floor radiators or the last one on a loop, and bleeding them fixes it. If the same radiators go cold again within weeks, suspect a stuck valve, a weak circulator or a loop that needs balancing. Air that keeps coming back means something is letting it in.
How do I bleed a cast iron radiator?
With the heat off and the radiator cool, open the small valve near the top with a radiator key, holding a rag underneath. Close it once the hissing stops and water flows steadily, then check the boiler pressure. If radiators need bleeding every few weeks, call us so we can find the source.
Can you take a radiator off so we can paint or redo the floors?
Yes. We shut down and drain the zone, disconnect the radiator at its valve and union, and cap the pipes so the rest of the system can keep running if needed. Afterward we reconnect, refill, bleed and check for leaks.
Why does my boiler make a banging or rumbling noise?
A rumbling, kettle-like sound usually means scale or sludge has built up inside the boiler, so water boils in spots. Banging in the pipes is more often trapped air or water hammer. A cleaning and flush fixes most rumbling, and bleeding the system takes care of most air noise. If it keeps up, we’ll look closer before it does damage.
